Tasmania: Little Island, Big Adventure —Helen Yeh Located about 240 kilometers off the south coast of mainland Australia, the island state of Tasmania seems to be a world apart. Its wildlife is rich and rare, and much of it is protected in parks and reserves. Apart from its natural beauty, Tasmania's growing food and art scenes have also drawn many visitors. A great place to visit for nature lovers is Freycinet National Park, which has a beautiful beach known as Wineglass Bay. Its round shape, white sands, and crystal-blue water make this beach one of the most beautiful on earth. Bird-watchers would do well to head to Maria Island, which is located to the south of the Freycinet Peninsula. The island has convenient hiking trails, and most of Tasmania's native birds—including the fairy penguin and the Cape Barren goose—can be found there. For a closer look at rare Tasmanian wildlife, as well as a chance to learn all about wildlife conservation, visit Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to several animals that now exist only in Tasmania, such as the Tasmanian devil and the eastern quoll.
