晚婚到底是Marry late還是Marry later?
Late這個字經常出現在我們的專欄，很奇怪，這麼簡單的字，居然也是英文出錯率最高的字之一。
先來整理之前提過和late相關的幾個錯誤，幫大家加深印象：
我昨晚很晚才睡：
- （Ｘ）I slept late last night. (slept late是睡到很晚起)
- （Ｏ）I went to bed late last night. / I was late going to bed last night.
我會晚５分鐘：
- （Ｘ）I will be late for 5 minutes.
- （Ｏ）I will be 5 minutes late.
今天早上他來辦公室來得很遲：
- （Ｘ）He late to come to the office this morning.
- （O）He was coming in late to the office this morning
關於"late" 更高階一點的的錯誤
“I am late.”單獨講感覺有內情
常看英美劇的人應該不會陌生，當女生和男生說：I am late. 其實就是指經期晚了，亦即「懷孕了」。
和朋友相約如果遲到時，我們會說Sorry, I am late. I overslept. 意思是「對不起，遲到了，我睡過頭了」，因為前面有加一個Sorry就不會造成誤解。
Late和lately不是形容詞和副詞的關係
這兩個字長得很像，很多人以為late是形容詞，加上ly的late就是它的副詞。其實不是。Late本身可以當形容詞或副詞，像這句：
I arrived late to the office. 我晚到辦公室。
其由的late就是副詞，修飾動詞arrived。
Late是「晚」，而lately是「最近」。來比較這兩句：
I had my first book published lately. 我的第一本書最近剛出版。
I had my first book published late. 我的第一本書很遲才出版。
晚婚是get married later in life還是get married late in life
說到晚婚，英文我們會用late這個字的比較級later。
Getting married later in life is a modern trend. 晚婚已經變成現化趨勢。
很多人會問為什麼要用later而不用late就好了。如果用late，會有一點主觀色彩，可能覺得晚婚不好或不得已，而later則有這種「晚一點」是個人的選擇。來看這兩句：
- You are late to get married. 你這是太晚才結婚。（感覺好像晚婚不好）
- I choose to get married later in life. 我選擇晚一點再結婚。
