| | | | | Rediscovering Wonder: The Works of Janet Echelman —Rhett Straub It's easy to lose yourself in wonder when looking at Janet Echelman's works. The American artist uses netting to create giant sculptures, sometimes the size of buildings, which are hung overhead in public spaces. Like brightly colored clouds floating in the sky, these sculptures change shape in response to the shifting natural wind and light. In changing so, they also create new perspectives of the spaces in which they're found. Viewers can't but feel a deeper connection to the elements and the surrounding urban landscape when experiencing these sculptures. Echelman's works are also unique in the way they were conceived and made. While walking on a beach in India years ago, she began observing the local fishermen making fishnets. Then, she wondered whether this craft tradition might be used to create large, modern artworks. Her first major sculpture was a net made of 1.5 million hand-tied knots, shown in Madrid. Then, Echelman was asked to create a sculpture for display in Portugal. Since the display would be permanent, she searched two years for a material strong enough to survive severe weather conditions. Working with an engineer and an industrial fishnet manufacturer, she created a 50,000-square-foot net. Titled She Changes, it's known as the first fluid public sculpture of its kind. | 《 詳細內文請翻閱NO.159 7月號Live互動英語雜誌 》 | | | | | | Useful Exchanges 討價還價實用對答 | • A: If you buy the sunglasses, I'll throw in a case for free. • B: That sounds like a good deal.
