South African English There are many languages in South Africa, the most common being native languages like Zulu and Xhosa, but for general purposes most people will be able to communicate in English, especially in Cape Town. If you want to fit in a bit better, perhaps take on some slang words to impress new South African friends: - Lekker
– This actually means tasty, but it can be used for anything good. “This movie is Lekker!” - Bru
– Like brother or friend. - Is it
– this is often used as a reply to someone’s comment. It just means, “Is that so?” “I saw your sister yesterday!” “Is it!” - Township
– Poor neighborhoods which black South Africans were confined to during Apartheid. - Ag
– This is actually pronounced, “ach,” and is used to start a sentence to show frustration or dissatisfaction. “Ag, bru, why have you come so late? Action 1: Rainbow City 別再認為南非是小歐洲,儘管有豐富的族群文化,和平的路上總是多有犧牲 South Africa is the Rainbow Nation and Cape Town is the rainbow city. For many Taiwanese people who think of South Africa, they think of the cliché images of lions and tigers. While those scenes do exist, South Africa is much more than that. A young boy is pictured in Mfuleni Township in Cape Town. When landing in Cape Town, the first thing you will see are the townships on both sides of the highway heading into the city. These are poorer districts of the city and remnants of Apartheid. Nowadays, outsiders looking for better opportunity settle in these areas, while Cape Town looks like a high class European city in many areas. Indeed, Cape Town is a place of great contrast in people and places, but to me, that is what makes it beautiful. Action 2: Culinary City 咖啡癮君子的麥加、拿破崙盛讚的葡萄酒家鄉 Looking for something to eat, you will have trouble finding something you don’t like. Coffee shops, pubs and restaurants line the streets in the downtown district are everywhere. One place, which has been called the best coffee shop in the world, is Truth Coffee. It boasts a truly unique environment with some unique dishes. The employees and décor are unlike anything anywhere else. South Africa is also a mecca for wine lovers. In Cape Town visit one of the many wineries to delight your palette. There are many tours which can take you to different estates. All in all, Cape Town is an area with a high degree of quality in artisanal cuisine. This factor is enough to draw me back to the area. Action 3: Nature at your Doorstep 登上上帝的餐桌,鋪上鑲上雲朵的桌巾 Once in Cape Town, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of the city, with the Table Mountain as its glorious backdrop. Cape Town is built around the Table Mountain, the table-like mountain which can be seen everywhere in the city. This landmark is also the playground for outdoor lovers. You can take the cable car up, or you can take one of the many hikes which start near the cable car station. Hiking up is definitely more rewarding, but the cable car is great if you are short on time. Either way you will get some spectacular views from atop the mountain. South Africa for Taiwanese 給準備旅遊的台灣人,務必對周遭安全提高警戒 The one aspect Taiwanese may have a difficult time getting used to would be the differences in public safety. Although Cape Town is generally safe, crime remains very high due to long lasting effects of Apartheid, the old policy which kept whites and separated from people of color. Now that Apartheid has been finished for years, the country struggles to improve equality for all races in the Rainbow Nation. Do not be to flashy with your iPhone and camera and try to walk around with a partner or local friend. Don’t let all of this scare you from going, because the good sides outweigh the bad. Just make sure you watch out for yourself and use your judgment while walking at night. 本文收錄於英語島English Island 2016年8月號 訂閱雜誌 |
