The Beatles is the name of a band formed in 1960. Its members were from Liverpool, England. The Beatles did a lot to change the music and culture of the 1960s. Even today, their music continues to inspire youth all over the world. The band was made up of four young men: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They led the mid- 1960s musical British Invasion into the United States. The Beatles played rock and roll and pop music and sold more records in both England and America than any other singer or band of the 20th century. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr became some of the most famous people of the 1960s and 1970s, with millions of fans all over the world. The Beatles fans demonstrated intense levels of hysterical screaming during the band's concerts and during their travels to and from cities around the world. Often during a concert, the screaming was so loud that the band's music was completely drowned out. Newspapers and magazines noticed how frenzied the band's fans became, and the term "Beatlemania" was born. Not only did the Beatles inspire people through their music, but they also set trends with their clothing, hairstyles, behavior, and language. Because of improvements in global transportation and communication during the 1960s, they could reach out to fans around the world. Their creative influence extended into the huge cultural and political changes of that decade. Some people even credit them with helping to make English the most popular foreign language in the world. Although the band broke up in 1970, the Beatles' impact on pop culture is still evident today, and many people remain Beatles fans. Many of the Beatles fans believe that "Beatlemania" will live forever. |
