Borrowing Your Wardrobe
—James Baron

The "fast fashion" trend has changed the way people shop for clothes in recent years. Companies like Zara, Uniqlo, and H&M release cheap new designs frequently in order to encourage customers to renew their wardrobes. Such excess purchases are wasteful in many ways. First, there's the money spent on items that may hardly ever be worn. Second, the waste occupies space. Unwanted items of clothing make up around 5 percent of the garbage in US landfills. Third, textile waste affects environmental health, as dyes and chemicals in clothing can pollute the soil and water.

In response to this trend, fashion libraries have begun to spring up. Just as normal libraries lend out books, fashion libraries allow people to borrow clothes. They're especially popular in Northern Europe, where the sharing economy is going strong. In Sweden, for example, companies like Clothing Library give members access to a wide range of garments for just a small monthly fee.

Fashion library owners note that some customers have stopped buying clothes altogether, choosing to rent their outfits instead. Those who support this trend hope that a new borrowing culture will develop to help reduce the waste created by the fashion industry.

A Penny for Your Thoughts?
A: A penny for your thoughts?
B: I was thinking about that poor dog we saw in the street.

What's on your mind?
