The Republic of Colombia, located to the northwest of Brazil, is one of the world's poorest nations. In fact, 30.6 percent of the population in this country lives below the poverty line, and 9.1 percent of Columbians live in extreme poverty. _(1)_ This has given the government an opportunity to help some of the homeless people, who are forced to live on the streets of the capital city, Bogota. _(2)_ The program centers around a large trailer carrying converted shipping containers and portable toilet cubicles. _(3)_ Shampoo, soap, and clean towels are also provided. Once the homeless people have had a refreshing shower, or soaked in a hot tub, they can change into some new clothes donated by charity organizations. The next part of the service provides razor blades for the men who would like to shave. Men and women, as well as children, can cut their fingernails and get a free haircut if they wish. _(4)_ For this reason, the program also provides a convenient wholesome meal. The final part of the service provides essential vaccinations and some basic medical care. Initially, the mobile service center operated once every two weeks. After a few months, it became a weekly service. The Secretary for Social Integration, Teresa Munoz Lopera, says the service will soon begin to operate daily. She also says there are plans to start a second mobile service center. _(5)_ The annual cost of each service center is approximately US$7 million, which every caring Colombian agrees is money well spent. (A) In July, 2013, the Mayor of Bogota launched a program to provide the city's disadvantaged with some basic facilities most of us take for granted. (B) Living in poverty sometimes means missing meals. (C) Each container is equipped with showers, baths, and basins. (D) Fortunately, the impoverished nation has recently seen some much-needed economic growth. (E) This will provide 400 people a day with these essential facilities. |
