Leonard On western Austria's border with Germany lies Salzburg, a 1,300-year-old city famed for its beautiful buildings, medieval streets, and fine music and food. Its magnificent hilltop castle, postcard-ready views of the Alps, and significant role in Austrian culture make Salzburg a must-see destination on any European tour. Lovers of classical music flock to Salzburg to visit the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose childhood home is now a museum devoted to the composer's life. Visitors are treated to the sight of the musical genius's5 first violin, given to him when he was only six years old. Another musical draw is the Salzburg Festival, with its operas, dramas, and classical concerts. The movie The Sound of Music was based on Salzburg's Trapp Family Singers, who performed at the festival in the years before World War II. Much of the film was shot on location in Salzburg, and visitors can still tour the Trapp family home.
