Mark March 8 on your calendar because there are certainly a few women in your life that deserve a toast. _(1)_ The earliest celebrations, in some way, shape, or form, date back to the early 1900s on various dates, depending on geographical location. _(2)_ Now, the day has become such a symbol that the United Nations has even begun to add a theme each year. _(3)_ This year, the theme is to inspire change.
Once thought to belong only at home and in the kitchen, women today are leading countries, flying to space, and changing the world. They haven't come by these opportunities easily, though. In fact, some women around the world are still fighting for equality. _(4)_ It has only been over the last 100 years that women have been granted the right to vote, work, and express their opinions. In most cases, it was female-led strikes, marches, and other demonstrations that began the women's revolution. _(5)_ There is no arguing against how much women have contributed to shaping this world. Therefore, on March 8 of this year, wear a purple ribbon to commemorate and honor women everywhere and perhaps buy some chocolate or roses to thank those close to you.
(A) In 2012, rural women were empowered to end hunger and poverty, while 2013 was a time for action to end violence against women.
(B) Wherever you are in the world, regardless of proximity, religion, culture, or economy, International Women's Day is held on this date for all women to celebrate their achievements.
(C) In all cases, females have courageously overcome hurdles in the seemingly endless fight for women's rights.
(D) It wasn't until 1914, however, that much of the world recognized International Women's Day as being on March 8.
(E) In Taiwan and some Asian countries, women have been highly respected for many years.
(F) For centuries, strong-willed women have been fighting for respect, appreciation, and love.
