A Drive through Provence Paris may be the capital of France, but Provence is its heart. The landscape and culture of this southeastern corner of the country have inspired artists for centuries. Since many of its cities are just a stone's throw away from each other, they can be easily experienced on a delightful road trip. If you're coming from the north, a convenient entry point to Provence is Avignon, one of France's most beautiful cities. It was home to the popes during the fourteenth century, and its former glory is still visible today from the presence of the Papal Palace. It's the largest Gothic palace in Europe, and you can go inside and get a sense of how the popes lived. Then, take a walk on the nearby bridge to catch an amazing view of the Rhone River and the sand-colored palace walls rising against the city's blue skies. Not far from the palace is Avignon's main square, lined with open-air restaurants and cafes. After a relaxing meal here, wander south on the city's tree-lined avenues towards Dyers Street, where fabric dyers used to do their trade. This narrow street runs along a canal with ancient waterwheels, and on the opposite side, you can peek into trendy shops and beautiful gardens. |
