It is a beautiful day at the beach, and you are taking in the sun, the surf, and all the people having a fantastic time. Then, you spot a person holding what looks like a stick with a round plate attached to the end. There is a concentrated look on his face as he waves this odd device back and forth across the surface of the sand. For those who don't know what is going on, the person is using a metal detector to hunt for lost treasure like coins and jewelry in the sand. This activity may seem strange, but it is actually a growing hobby in the West. Some hobbyists search beaches. Others use it to look for valuable metals, such as gold and silver. Still others are hooked on finding items of historical worth. Two such diggers, as they are called, are George Wyant and Tim Saylor. They travel across the US trying to uncover lost pieces of American history. Tune in to National Geographic Channel's Diggers to get to the bottom of what they do with metal detectors. |
