There has been a lot of discrimination throughout history. A group of people may be accepted in one place but then rejected somewhere else. Sometimes, they even have a hard time finding a place to live in peace. Like many groups and communities, the gay community has events to celebrate freely who they are. They take this time to show the world that they are not going to change that. It is also a time when friends and supporters of the gay community show their love and acceptance. Gay Pride Month is celebrated in the US every June. It is also when the events of Gay Pride week take place. June was chosen because a historicstandoff took place in New York City in 1969. There had been a lot of violence towards the gay community for years then. The police were even demanding money from them in exchange for protection. During one incident, the people being attacked stood up for themselves and refused to be bullied. Word spread, and more people came to support them. More police came as well, and the standoff lasted for days. In the end, the Gay Liberation Front was created to stop the violence and hatred against the gay community.
