Hsieh San-tai—Through the Eyes of a Photographer

We usually take photos to save moments in the real world. However, photos can also capture a person's dreams. This is what photographer Hsieh San-tai has achieved through his project My Aspiration.

A series of thirty photos, My Aspiration shows images in which physically disabled people are placed in settings that represent their dream jobs. These dreams include being a fashion designer, a basketball player, a musician, and even a soldier. In each photo, a white screen physically separates the person from the job setting. This screen also symbolizes the real-life barriers that prevent people from achieving their dreams and from being socially accepted.

This isn't the first time that Hsieh has looked into the lives of people living on society's borders. In another project, he let homeless people become the photographers. Giving each a camera, he asked them to photograph their surroundings, and then the photos were shown in public. The project helped create connections. "It allowed homeless people to feel like a part of society," Hsieh says. It also gave viewers a sense of homeless peoples' experiences.
